FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions)

What is UDDI?
The Universal Description, Discovery, and Integration (UDDI) protocol is a a platform-independent framework for managing Web services relationships and interactions. A UDDI registry classifies, catalogs, and manages Web services, so that they can be discovered and consumed by other applications.
What is the current status of UDDI?
UDDI currently stands at version 3.0.2, ratified in February 2005. This version provides key capabilities for enterprise-level deployment and is a mature, well-supported standard. Its feature definitions are stable and backwards-compatible with earlier versions of the standard.

Example 2 -- comments-based submissions

This is another example of how to handle user-submitted information. The intro material, instructions, etc., would be entered here in the main body. Then, users can add their info via the comments function.

Example 1 -- one page/one item

This style of page illustrates method one for supporting user-contributed information. It consists of one page per item submitted. Its feasibility depends upon whether or not we can create an index page that automatically updates a hierarchy/directory of pages. So the user will post his/her info here and also can attach a file that will be associated with the post. This approach would be great for user-submitted white papers, case studies, etc.

UDDI White Papers White Papers has published two educational white papers in conjunction with the formal ratification of version 3 of the standard; the first presents an executive overview of UDDI and its business value to implementors of web services-based infrastructure. The second highlights key features of the standard, with an emphasis on features new to version 3. Note: These white papers are published in PDF format. To view a PDF document, you must have a copy of Adobe Reader or other PDF-compatible software installed on your computer. If you do not have this software installed, you can download a free copy from Adobe Systems, Inc.

UDDI Executive Overview: Enabling Service-Oriented Architecture
The Universal Description, Discovery, and Integration (UDDI) protocol is a key member of the group of interrelated standards that comprise the Web services stack. It defines a standard method for publishing and discovering the network-based software components of a service-oriented architecture (SOA). This paper discusses the strategic rationale for UDDI and analyzes its enabling role in the context of today's enterprise Web services applications. A companion slide presentation is also provided (available in PDF and PowerPoint formats).
Introduction to UDDI: Important Features and Functional Concepts
This paper provides a concise overview of the UDDI standard and highlights significant architectural changes in the recent Version 3 specification. The paper covers key functional concepts in the UDDI specification including its data model and programmatic interfaces. Also covered in this paper is a description of registry affiliation - a key feature enabled by the UDDI v3 specification.
